To our beloved Catholic siblings and the global Christian community,
It is with a heavy heart that I extend my deepest condolences on the passing of Pope Francis. This morning, the Church has lost a giant in the faith—a humble servant whose life and ministry bore witness to the love, grace, and compassion of Jesus Christ.
I had the honor of meeting with Pope Francis this past December in my role as President of the World Methodist Council. In our time together, I witnessed firsthand the depth of his spirit, the clarity of his wisdom, and the profound humility with which he led. Our conversations centered around how the Catholic Church and the World Methodist Council might walk more closely together for the sake of God’s Kingdom.
Pope Francis expressed a genuine desire for deeper ecumenical collaboration, rooted not in uniformity but in shared purpose and love for Christ. His openness, warmth, and unwavering commitment to justice and mercy left a lasting impression on me—and on so many around the world.
Today, although we grieve, we also celebrate a life faithfully lived, a calling boldly followed, and a leader who consistently pointed us to the heart of the Gospel. Pope Francis reminded us, time and again, that the Church exists not for itself but for the world God so loves.
Pope Francis’ witness will continue to shape and inspire generations of believers across denominational lines.
As he now joins the Church Triumphant, we give thanks to God for his life and leadership. Our prayers are with you.
Gracious and loving God, We give thanks for the life and ministry of Pope Francis. Thank You for the way he shepherded Your people with wisdom, humility, and grace. We lift up the Roman Catholic Church in this time of mourning. Surround them with comfort and peace that passes understanding. Guide the leaders who will prayerfully discern the next pope. And draw us all closer to one another, that we may bear united witness to the hope and light of Christ in a world so deeply in need.
In Jesus’ name we pray, Amen.
With hope in the resurrection,
Bishop Debra Wallace-Padgett
President, World Methodist Council
